Today, we’d like to challenge you to write your own sad poem, but one that, like Teicher’s, achieves sadness through simplicity. Playing with the sonnet form may help you – its very compactness can compel you to be straightforward, using plain, small words.

It’s my Life
Unconditional love is a gift
Yet you chose to cause a rift
The Bible is just one Holy book
I’ve let go of that judgmental hook
Your holiness is meaningless to me
I’ll not do what you decree
Using your g-d as your weapon of choice
You tried to make me quiet my voice
Waiting for your acceptance is futile
I’ll go on living, even when brutal
Drink, eat, and be merry, then die
Going to hell is such a lie
It’s my life and I’ll do what I want
Regardless of your rules and various taunts

Humans just mess up sometimes.. I’m not sure what God intended.. 😉
