What’s in that damn box? #Na/GloPoWriMo Day 08-2019

So… some of you really wanted me to open that box. Refer to The Gift.

The prompt I’m using for today is from dVerse-write a quadrille and include the word “ace.”

A quadrille is a poem with exactly 44 words, not including the title!

***************************

I grabbed the box
And tore it open
Inside was another one, smaller
It must be an omen

I confessed to myself
The boxes are all empty
I knew not what to gift me

My face fell as I contemplated
The sadness I felt

  1. Having spent the day with a three-year-old on his birthday, seeing the joy of receiving — anything at all, the poignancy of this quadrille really hit me. I realize that every time I open a present, I am a three-year-old with expectations of magic and mystery. As an adult, I’m looking for the silver lining of this, the gift of the void, the wisdom that we can never be pleased by things…but that three-year-old insists on looking inside the empty box one more puzzling time.
